Marine safety is an important for any boater to keep themselves and their loved ones safe. Some of the different types of safety and survival gear include:

EPIRBs and Personal Locator Beacons (PLB) - An EPIRB or PLB are critical if your vessel goes down. These units will send an emergency signal to the Coast Guard with your location. An EPIRB is for the boat itself. It deploys when it submerges and can send a general signal or more advanced models will send your GPS coordinates. A PLB is used to be used on the body and is good for people in small boats or in extreme weather where a person might be thrown from the boat.
Life Vests and Personal Flotation Devices (PFD) - Life vests and PFDs have come a long way. Although you can get a more traditional PFD, today's life vests can come as inflatable versions which can be deployed manually or automatically.
Man over Board (MOB) - Man over Board systems work very much like PFDs, but are more designed for if someone goes overboard so the boat can find this person. This is used by fishers in extreme conditions.
Searchlights/Spotlights - Searchlights and spotlights can be invaluable safety and survival gear to find someone who went overboard or see objects at night or bad weather.
Float coats - Float coats are like PFDs except it is your coat that will inflate which is an added form of safety.
